
Women and Trauma
Trauma can best be understood in three broad categories: acute, chronic, and developmental. Below are several ways trauma may take shape in the lives of women—offered to help you recognize your experience with greater clarity.
Acute Trauma
- sexual assault
- complication during childbirth
- pregnancy loss
- devastating relationship loss
- loss of a loved one
Chronic Trauma
- intimate partner violence
- emotionally abusive or controlling relationships
- war/combat exposure
- long-term caregiving
- ongoing workplace exploitation, harassment, or discrimination
- first responder work
Developmental Trauma
- childhood emotional neglect, physical abuse, and/or sexual abuse
- emotionally unavailable, inconsistent, or dysfunctional caregiving environments
- being placed in an adult role at a young age

- bearing witness to another’s trauma, often referred to as the “cost of caring” and “compassion fatigue”
