Women & Trauma

Trauma can best be understood in three broad categories: acute, chronic, and developmental. Below are several ways trauma may take shape in the lives of women—offered to help you recognize your experience with greater clarity.


Acute Trauma

  • sexual assault
  • complications during childbirth
  • pregnancy loss
  • devastating relationship loss
  • loss of a loved one


Chronic Trauma

  • intimate partner violence
  • pattern of emotionally abusive or controlling relationships
  • war/combat exposure
  • ongoing workplace exploitation, harassment, or discrimination
  • first responder work

 

Developmental Trauma

  • childhood neglect and/or abuse
  • emotionally unavailable, inconsistent, or dysfunctional caregiving environments

Vicarious Trauma

  • bearing witness to another’s trauma, often referred to as the “cost of caring” and “compassion fatigue”
